LIBRARY RESOURCES

ACCENT - Centralized Library Automated System (CLAS)
The Centralized Library Automated System is a catalog of the LAUSD's library and media resources in one centralized database. CLAS supports the District's program of educational technology and the integration of learning resources. The system utilizes a single cataloging standard for all library materials in every K-12 school.

Digital Library
The Digital Library bridges the "Digital Divide" by providing all students equal access to up-to-date online reference materials via the Library and Information Services website on the Los Angeles Unified School District's LAUSDnet. The Digital Library has fifteen databases including ABC Clio, AccuNet/Ap, Britannica Online, Career Cruising, Columbia University Press, Country Watch, CultureGrams, EBSCO, Facts.com, Facts on File, Thomson Gale, Grolier Online, Grove/Oxford, Maps 101 and World Book Online plus links to free educational websites.

Technology
The library now has eight computers for use by students, four iMacs used for the Accelerated Reader Program and four IBM Pentium IV computers that are maintained by the District with 15 Databases, the ACCENT Automated Catalog and Internet access.

The Library Collection
The Mark Twain Middle School Library houses a collection of approximately 12,600 volumes of the typical middle school proportion of fiction and non-fiction books including six up to date sets of encyclopedias plus a Spanish language one. In addition, the library maintains a comic/manga and graphic novel collection and has sixteen magazine subscriptions and ten copies of the LA Times available for the students.

LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Overall Program
The Mark Twain Middle School Library must meet the educational and enrichment needs of the students, faculty and staff by providing a comprehensive and up to date collection of educational and recreational resources in various formats to support the school’s curriculum and educational programs. The library strives to provide easy accessibility to these resources for both students and teachers. Students may check out two books for a two week loan period with two renewals. A late fee of $.10 per day excluding weekends and holidays is charged with a $5.00 cap. Students are responsible for paying for the cost of lost or damaged books.

The library supports the following educational programs: the Accelerated Reader Program, Reading Is Fundamental, Silent Sustained Reading, Literature for Success, and the Extended Learning Program.

Homework Center
The library maintains a homework center for students with dictionaries (English and Spanish), thesauri, The World Almanac, National Geographic, Atlases, The N.Y. Public Library Desk Reference for quick and easy access to homework resources.

Accelerated Reader Program
The library supports the implementation of the “AR” program, a school wide reading incentive program. Students read a book at their reading level, and then take a quiz about that book. They must pass the quiz to advance to the next level. Students are awarded points for each book they read. The library collection includes a large selection of AR books and has four iMacs available in the Library to take the AR quizzes.

The FundingFactory Program
The library raises funds to increase technology by participating in the FundingFactory Recycling Program that collects and recycles old laser and inkjet cartridges plus old cell phones. It is the premier provider of recycling solutions for schools, early childcare centers, libraries and other educational organizations. www.FundingFactory.com
